Course URL:https://flippednormals.com/products/creating-creatures-for-games-the-complete-masterclass

A complete AAA creature pipeline masterclass covering sculpting, retopology, baking, texturing, and final presentation in Unreal Engine 5.

This masterclass walks you through the entire AAA creature pipeline, from the first sculpt to a polished real-time scene. You’ll build a creature from scratch in ZBrush, retopologize it for games, bake maps in Marmoset Toolbag, texture it in Substance 3D Painter, and assemble everything in Unreal Engine 5. No timelapses, no skipped steps—just a full production workflow you can apply to your own projects.

🎯 What you’ll learn

  • Sculpt a complete creature from scratch in ZBrush
  • Retopologize using an industry-standard, quad-based method
  • Create clean UV layouts and organize them across UDIM tiles
  • Bake normal and mesh maps in Marmoset Toolbag
  • Texture a creature from scratch in Substance 3D Painter
  • Build hard-surface props like manacles using a full pipeline
  • Assemble and light a final real-time scene in Unreal Engine 5

✅ Requirements

  • Skills: Basic experience with sculpting, retopology, UV mapping, texture painting, and game engines like UE5
  • Tools: Blender, ZBrush, Marmoset Toolbag, Substance 3D Painter, Unreal Engine 5
  • Hardware: A computer capable of running ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter, and Unreal Engine 5 smoothly

📝 Description

This course is built around one goal: getting you from a blank scene to a studio-ready creature. Every stage is shown in real time and fully narrated, so you see the actual decision-making behind each step. You won’t find timelapses or skipped steps here—just a straight walkthrough of a production pipeline that works.

The workflow is structured to be reliable and repeatable. You’ll start by sculpting the creature in ZBrush, using a base mesh built in Blender. From there, you’ll retopologize with a clean, quad-based method that serves both as a sculpting mesh and a final real-time model. UVs are handled directly in Blender, with a focus on efficient layouts and UDIM organization.

Baking happens in Marmoset Toolbag with a simple setup that avoids projection errors. Then you’ll move to Substance 3D Painter, where hand-painted details, procedurals, and baked maps come together to give the creature its final look. The course also covers hard-surface props—specifically the manacles—so you see how organic and hard-surface assets fit together in a real game pipeline.

The final module brings everything into Unreal Engine 5. You’ll adapt MetaHuman eyes, build materials, and set up cinematic lighting to present your creature as a polished portfolio piece. The focus stays strictly on asset creation—rigging, animation, and custom posing are not covered.

🧑‍🎓 Who this course is for

  • Intermediate 3D artists comfortable with the basics of sculpting, retopology, UV mapping, and texturing
  • Artists looking to build a complete game-ready creature portfolio piece
  • Anyone wanting a structured, repeatable workflow for real-time AAA asset creation

🧑‍🏫 About the Author

Henning Sanden is a veteran character and creature artist with over 15 years of experience. He’s spent more than a decade creating creatures for Hollywood blockbusters like Alien, Pacific Rim, and Pirates of the Caribbean. As co-founder of FlippedNormals, he’s dedicated to teaching artists the skills needed to work at a professional level. His experience spans both film and games, giving him a unique perspective on what makes a creature pipeline efficient and effective.

🏁 Final Result

By the end of the course, you’ll have a fully textured, lit, and shaded creature presented in a real-time Unreal Engine 5 scene. The project includes the sculpted high-res model, a game-ready low-poly mesh, clean UVs, baked maps, and a complete texture set—everything you need to showcase your work as a studio-ready portfolio piece.
