Coloso’s first dedicated creature modeling class by Cha Hokyung, creature artist behind Monster Hunter Rise with experience at CAPCOM and UBISOFT. Across 20 videos and over 18 hours you master ZBrush sculpting from basic shapes to scales, wrinkles and hair materials, completing three original creatures step by step.
🎯 What you’ll learn
- Sculpt in ZBrush from the ground up: tools, SubTools, geometry, brushes and DynaMesh
- Build creatures from basic shapes: turn primitives and a cube-into-sphere exercise into solid sculpting fundamentals
- Design forms that do not exist: monsters, beasts and otherworldly creatures from imagination and reference
- Craft advanced surface detail: realistic scales, wrinkles and hair materials with FiberMesh and groom brushes
- Create custom alphas and IMM brushes: seamless alpha maps, Surface Noise texturing, UV Master unwrapping
- Block organic forms efficiently with ZSpheres and apply anatomy to creature silhouettes
- Pose with Transpose Master, build props, decimate and render the final result in Marmoset Toolbag
- Balance overall form with intricate accents to produce a versatile, recruiter-ready creature portfolio
✅ Requirements
- Skills: Beginner-friendly; no prior creature experience needed, basic 3D understanding helps
- Tools: ZBrush 2020 or higher (class recorded in 2021.5.1), Marmoset Toolbag 3 or higher for final rendering
- Hardware: PC capable of running ZBrush, drawing tablet required (any brand); class includes practice ZTL files and PSD alpha maps
📝 Description
While humanoid character modeling is a common skill, the ability to craft monsters, beasts, and otherworldly creatures is what sets a competitive 3D artist apart in games and film. Creature modeling challenges you to design shapes that do not exist in reality, master intricate textures, scales and dynamic features, and develop imagination and storytelling through your designs. Yet professional-level training focused purely on creatures is extremely hard to find — this class was created to fill exactly that gap as Coloso’s first dedicated creature modeling course.
The course is built around a simple but powerful idea: using only ZBrush from start to finish. Many artists treat ZBrush as a detailing tool on top of a 3ds Max or Maya base and struggle to freely transform forms. Here you learn to deform, reshape and invent forms directly in ZBrush, so whatever you imagine can be realized without switching tools. Training starts with pure fundamentals — sculpting a perfect sphere out of an angular cube using sculpting alone — and climbs steadily to practitioner-level creature production.
You complete three creatures of rising difficulty. The snail teaches base forms from primitives, custom seamless alpha maps and Surface Noise texturing. The caterpillar monster teaches transforming a real animal into an imaginative design with a custom IMM brush you build yourself. The final demon-world creature is a full production pipeline: concept study and animal reference research, ZSpheres blocking, anatomy-driven volume, secondary detail and retopology with ZRemesher, face, hands and feet analysis, scales, wrinkle theory, FiberMesh hair and grooming, Transpose Master posing, prop and base creation, decimation and a final Marmoset Toolbag render.
Beyond tool skills, you absorb the production know-how of a globally recognized creature artist: how to hold overall balance while pushing fine detail, how to keep silhouettes readable, and how real-world Monster Hunter creature techniques transfer to your own portfolio pieces.
