Build game-ready and cinematic lighting in UE5 from scratch using free assets, Lumen, and practical studio setups.

Want your UE5 scenes to stop looking flat? This course walks you through building full lighting systems for exteriors, interiors, and studio shots with Unreal Engine 5 and Lumen, using only free assets.

🎯 What you’ll learn

  • Install UE5, grab Marketplace / FAB assets, and get around the editor fast
  • Use Directional Light, Sky Light, Sky Atmosphere, Exponential Height Fog, and Volumetric Clouds
  • Build an exterior lighting setup with Post Process Volume for cinematics
  • Build an interior lighting system and control Lumen for clean, realistic bounces
  • Create AAA-style interior look and a fast God Rays effect with volumetrics
  • Work with Point Light, Spot Light, Rect Light, and Emissive Materials
  • Create and organize Sublevels for larger lighting scenarios
  • Light a studio scene with 1-light and 3-light techniques
  • Create GOBO light functions and use IES profiles for real-world fixtures
  • Render to PNG, EXR, and Path Tracing with practical settings and tips

✅ Requirements

  • Skills: Basic understanding of UE4 or UE5 is helpful but not required
  • Tools: Unreal Engine 5 installed, 3-button mouse for viewport navigation
  • Hardware: Dedicated GPU with DX12 support for Lumen and Path Tracing, minimum 16GB RAM

📝 Description

This is a hands-on, no-fluff run through lighting in Unreal Engine 5. You start with a blank project, pull in free assets from Marketplace / FAB, and build every setup yourself. No pre-baked magic scenes — you wire up the lights, tweak the values, and see what actually changes.

First block is exteriors. You will put together a full daylight rig with Directional Light, Sky Light, Sky Atmosphere, and Volumetric Clouds, then shape it with Exponential Height Fog and Post Process Volume. It is built to work for both gameplay levels and short cinematic shots.

Then you switch inside. Interiors are where most people get stuck with noise, flat shadows, or blown-out windows. Here you learn to balance Lumen, HDRI Backdrop, and practical lights to get that soft AAA bounce. There is also a quick method for God Rays using volumetric scattering that takes minutes, not hours of tweaking.

Last part is all about control and style. You will light the same kind of object two ways — with a single key light and with a fuller studio rig using Rect Light, Spot Light, and Emissive Materials. You will also build a custom GOBO material, plug in real IES profiles, and organize everything with Sublevels so big scenes stay manageable.

You finish with output: clean settings for PNG, EXR, and Path Tracing, plus 8 free GOBO textures and 4 free IES textures you can keep and reuse. Straight, practical stuff you can drop right into your portfolio.

🧑‍🎓 Who this course is for

  • Beginner to intermediate game devs, virtual production artists, video editors, and animators who want better-looking UE5 scenes
  • Any artist who can open UE5 but struggles to make lighting look cinematic and believable

🧑‍🏫 About the Author

3D College is run by an Authorized Unreal Engine Instructor with a background in real production work. He has led projects for teams including EA, Plarium, Konami, and Square Enix, and worked on over 100 different cinematic projects as a 3D artist. That mix of teaching and shipping work is why the course sticks to workflows that actually hold up in games and cinematics.

🏁 Final Result

  • A set of finished exterior, interior, and studio lighting scenarios built from scratch, rendered to PNG / EXR stills ready for your portfolio.
