In this comprehensive course, we’ll walk through the creation of a mechanical sci-fi reveal, covering every step from initiation to completion.

Geometry Creation

Utilizing Houdini, we’ll craft all the necessary geometry using a blend of procedural techniques and some non-procedural methods. We’ll delve into optimizing mesh for efficient UV application and prepare for rendering with subdivisions.

FX Design

Our growth effects will be primarily particle-driven. VEX functions like volumesample, quaternions, and cross products will play a pivotal role. We’ll master timers for precise control over particles, and for the final reveal, a straightforward propagation setup offers both freedom and control.

Rendering

Redshift will be our tool for rendering, where we’ll craft materials using provided textures. The focus will be on setting up custom AOVs, exporting attributes and textures as separate passes, and incorporating a simple volumetric pass for added ambiance.

Compositing

In the Nuke segment, we’ll assemble all elements. Reconstructing the beauty pass from split AOVs, we’ll integrate custom passes, implement depth of field effects, and infuse volumetric effects. Additionally, we’ll craft a 3D fog environment using Nuke’s particle system to enhance our volumetric pass, concluding with additional effects for a polished final look.

Join us on this journey through the course, and let’s embark on crafting this compelling mechanical sci-fi reveal!
