📝 Description
This is not a button-pushing tutorial. It’s a full walkthrough of how a film character actually gets made. You follow Yipeng Zhang in real time as he takes the Lion Spirit King from Journey to the West from rough blockout to finished cinematic render.
The hook here is workflow. Seven apps, one character. Maya for base and hard-surface, ZBrush for sculpt, Marvelous Designer for cloth, Mari and Substance Painter for textures, XGen for fur, Arnold for final image. You learn which tool to use for which job, and why. That saves you hours on your own projects.
Modeling starts with intent. Big shapes first, then anatomy, then lion-specific design — muzzle, mane base, brow, teeth, claws. For the body, it’s about weight and presence. This guy is a king, not just a monster. You work on silhouette so he reads well even in dark lighting.
Then gear. This is where most juniors get stuck. Armor looks fake because everything has the same bevel and material. Here you break it down: hard metal plates vs stitched leather vs flowing cloth. You get practical tricks for edges, thickness, damage, and how to keep hard-surface topology clean enough to subdivide and texture without pain.
UVs and texturing are treated like production work, not an afterthought. Different UV density for face vs hidden parts. Different texturing approach for skin vs armor. Mari handles high-res skin detail, Substance Painter handles worn metal and props fast. You learn how to layer detail so the model holds up in close-up.
Fur and render close it out. XGen grooming for mane and body hair, with attention to direction and breakup so it doesn’t look like a helmet. Then Arnold shading and lighting — how to set up SSS for skin, sheen for fur, reflections for armor, and how to keep render times sane on a 40-hour asset.
Recorded in real time, so you can keep pace, pause, and copy the steps. Some basics in Maya and ZBrush are not explained from zero, but if you already sculpt a bit, you’ll be fine.
