This is Unit 3 of the 3D action-adventure series, and it’s all about the world. You’ll build two playable 3D levels in Godot — an overworld imported from Blender and a modular castle made with GridMaps — then tie them together with shaders, transitions, and pickups.
🎯 What you’ll learn
- Use 3D models from Blender in Godot
- Create modular levels with grid maps
- Build shaders for water, grass, and lava
- Implement level transition systems
- Add environmental variety for player immersion
- Implement item pickups
✅ Requirements
- Skills: Solid understanding of Godot and GDScript, basic familiarity with spatial shaders (optional)
- Tools: Godot 4 installed, Blender installed for handling level models
📝 Description
Action-adventure lives or dies by its levels. Empty rooms and flat terrain kill the vibe fast. This course fixes that by having you build two very different 3D levels from scratch — so you learn both workflows you’ll actually use in Godot projects.
First up is the overworld. You’ll take models built in Blender, bring them into Godot, and turn them into a playable space with collision, props, and layout that feels good to run around in. It’s practical stuff: scale, spacing, sightlines, where to put details so the player keeps moving.
Then you switch gears to the castle. Instead of importing, you’ll build it modular-style with GridMaps. Fast to lay out, easy to change, perfect for dungeons, forts, and interiors. You’ll snap together walls, floors, and corridors, then dress it up so it doesn’t look grid-made.
To tie it all together, you’ll write custom spatial shaders for water, grass, and lava. Plus a clean level transition system and item pickups. By the end you’ve got connected, good-looking levels — not just test scenes — and a setup you can keep expanding into a full game.
