This is Unit 1 of a full 3D action-adventure build in Godot, and it’s all about characters. You’ll get a playable hero moving, fighting, and blocking, plus enemies that look different every time they spawn.
🎯 What you’ll learn
- Design and configure a 3D character
- Animate actions with Godot’s animation trees
- Add multiple weapons and shields
- Generate enemies with random appearances
- Program player combat mechanics, including defending
- Work with inheritance for cleaner code
✅ Requirements
- Skills: Solid understanding of Godot editor, GDScript basics, and working with 3D objects
- Tools: Godot Engine installed, 3-button mouse
- Hardware: PC or Mac capable of running Godot 3D projects
📝 Description
This unit skips the fluff and gets straight to what makes adventure games fun: characters that feel good to control. You’ll set up a 3D character from scratch in Godot, wire up movement, and then make it look right with AnimationTree blends for idle, run, attack, and block.
Combat is the core here. You’ll add swappable weapons and shields, code light attack logic, and add defending so fights have some back-and-forth. No copy-paste magic — you’ll see how the hitboxes, timers, and states actually connect.
Then you’ll tackle enemies. Instead of hand-placing the same guy everywhere, you’ll build a system that randomizes appearance on spawn. You’ll also use GDScript inheritance to keep player and enemy code clean and reusable. That’s a big win when this project grows into a full game in later units.
