Turn music discs packaging into an innovative element that communicates
The relationship with music has changed, and only the true music lovers are those who, in addition to having an album of physical music to listen to, also have it to see the music through its design. Cactus Taller Gráfico – a winning studio design for two Latin Grammy and one Grammy for Best Recording Package – has more than 10 years of experience creating designs under the phenomenon of printed interactivity, using packaging as a message.

In this course you will learn to design the packaging and the art of a disc from conceptualization, prototyping and design to the preparation of the files to be delivered to the press.

What will you learn in this online course?
You will start by getting to know the members of Cactus Taller Gráfico, who will tell you about their interests, they will show you some of the albums they have developed for different artists and the process behind their work. You will also discover the various influences that directors, artists, designers and writers exert on their work and vision.

You will know the terminology and the different packages that are part of the music industry standard. You will study some vinyl and CD packaging that are referents for their innovative and ingenious solutions and that communicate very well the values of the music they contain.

You will start your project with the research and conceptualization phase. To do this, you will perform an exercise in approaching music, and developing visual tools that generate a starting point to work with the client: the musician, the band and / or a record company. With these inputs you will develop the sketches that will be the first approach to packaging and art.

From the sketch, you will perform exercises with modules in Adobe InDesign or Illustrator to create a package that will become a laser-cut die to evaluate its construction, functionality and possibilities for improvement.

Once the prototype is finished and improved, Luisa will create the art that will be integrated into the design of the final packaging. Then you will run print tests to make sure everything is perfect before going to the printer.

What is this course’s project?
You will design the packaging of a disc from conceptualization, sketching, prototyping and cover design to the preparation for printing.

Who is this online course for?
Designers, illustrators and in general any creative who has an interest in music and to develop unusual packaging.
