Learn Houdini from zero and build your first procedural VFX shot with the free Apprentice version.

Always wanted to try Houdini but bounced off the interface? This class gets you past that. You install the free Apprentice version, learn how the program actually thinks, and finish with a working footprint effect you can show off.

🎯 What you’ll learn

  • Download and install Houdini Apprentice for free
  • Navigate the viewport, shelf, and geometry networks
  • Work with procedural geometry and animated objects
  • Drive a color attribute to create footprints on a grid
  • Use attribute transfer inside a solver to make footprints persist

✅ Requirements

  • Skills: No prior Houdini experience needed, basic understanding of 3D space is helpful
  • Tools: Houdini Apprentice (free version), 3-button mouse
  • Hardware: 64-bit computer with at least 8GB RAM, dedicated GPU recommended for viewport performance

📝 Description

SideFX Houdini is the tool behind the big visual effects shots at Disney, Pixar, and Marvel. It’s node-based, procedural, and yeah – weird at first. This series is built to get you over that first hump without drowning you in theory.

You start simple: install, open it up, click around without breaking stuff. Chris walks you through the viewport, the network editor, and why everything in Houdini is just data flowing through nodes. No long lectures. You see it, you do it.

Then you put it to work on the Footprints project. You get a starter file with animated spheres and a grid. Your job is to use those spheres to stamp color onto the grid like feet in sand. The bonus round is where it gets fun – you wire an attribute transfer into a solver so the prints stay after the foot lifts. That’s a core Houdini pattern you’ll reuse for trails, growth, wetmaps, and tons of other FX.

🧑‍🎓 Who this course is for

  • Complete beginners who want to start with Houdini for VFX
  • 3D artists from Maya, Blender or Cinema 4D curious about procedural workflows

He has also worked on theme park and live-show work including Universal Studios’ Despicable Me: The Ride and Rockettes to the Rescue for Radio City. Outside studio work he is a digital illustrator, which shows in how clearly he breaks down technical ideas for artists.

🏁 Final Result

  • A finished footprints simulation using the provided footprints_START file, with animated spheres driving persistent color footprints on a grid – ready to post for feedback
