📝 Description
This isn’t a button-tour. Romain walks you through a real shot the way you’d do it on a deadline – block it out, get your big shapes working first, then layer detail where the camera actually sees it.
You’ll jump between Houdini for the heavy lifting, Marvelous Designer for cloth that actually moves right, and Nuke to glue it all together. Destruction gives you the impact, smoke and particles sell the scale, and that lightning pass adds the punch. Each sim is kept lean so you can art-direct instead of waiting on caches.
The other smart bit is the LookDev HDA. You build a reusable setup to light and turntable your FX for breakdowns. Super handy for showreels and social posts, and you can drop it into future projects instead of rebuilding from scratch every time.
If your renders tend to look flat or your workflow feels slow, this fixes both. You learn what matters for the final image and what to skip.
🧑🎓 Who this course is for
- Intermediate FX artists who know Houdini basics and want a full shot workflow
- Artists who want to get faster at destruction, smoke, and comp without cutting quality
🧑🏫 About the Author
This workshop is presented by Urban on Double Jump Academy and led by Romain Czysz, a working FX artist focused on production-style simulation. He works across Houdini and compositing pipelines, with a focus on practical shots that read well on screen. His teaching style is direct and shot-based – less theory, more decisions you’d make on a real job.
🏁 Final Result
- A finished cinematic fire arrow shot, fully simulated and composited, plus a reusable LookDev setup for portfolio breakdowns.
