This is not another follow-along modeling class. minusT shows you how to use Blender, shader nodes, and smart texturing tricks to give your stylized characters a look that actually feels like yours, across three full outfits: modern, fantasy, and sci-fi.
π― What you’ll learn
- Shader node fundamentals – inputs, outputs, coordinates, and data types
- Cartoon shading setup and EEVEE vs Cycles workflow for characters
- UV-based texturing and procedural textures for clothes and props
- Custom brush creation, stencil painting, and texture baking in Blender
- Fantasy detailing – cloth simulation, fur, hair particles, sculpting, and retopology
- Sci-fi materials – carbon fiber, hex patterns, metal, translucent and hologram shaders
- Combining shaders with RGB maps and finishing with lighting and compositing nodes
β Requirements
- Skills: Basic Blender navigation and modeling, familiarity with UVs and Material Properties
- Tools: Blender 4.3, 3-button mouse, drawing tablet optional for texture painting
- Hardware: Dedicated GPU for Cycles and EEVEE rendering, minimum 16GB RAM recommended
π Description
If you can model but your characters still look flat, this class fills that gap. minusT starts with the stuff people usually skip – how light hits a surface, what roughness maps and normal maps actually do, and how ColorRamp and Mix nodes control a look. You get why nodes behave the way they do, so you can fix them instead of guessing.
Then you put it straight to work on a modern-style character. Smartphone screen with UV coordinates, sunglasses shader, leather shoes with image textures, shirt with procedural textures, pants with a custom stitching brush, then baking it all down for low-poly use. Small props, but every technique transfers to bigger outfits later.
The fantasy and sci-fi parts are where it gets fun. You will sculpt folds with cloth simulation, make knit and wood nodes from scratch, do fur with textures plus hair particles, sculpt and retopo horns, add stencil patterns and gem shaders, scatter flowers with geometry nodes, and rig the dress pieces with Data Transfer. Then switch gears to carbon fiber, hex patterns, translucent plastic, layered metals with RGB masks, and a hologram effect.
It wraps with posing, lighting, world shaders, and compositing nodes for color correction and lens effects. Everything stays inside Blender, and you end up with reusable node groups instead of one-off settings you will forget next week.
π§βπ Who this course is for
- Blender users who can model basics but get stuck on nodes and detailed character looks
- 3D character artists who want reusable stylized shading and texturing workflows
- Fans of subculture / anime-style characters who want to develop their own visual style
π§βπ« About the Author
minusT is a 3D animator and YouTuber focused on subculture animation made in Blender. He is fully self-taught with 16 years of experience, runs the minusT channel with over 30 million total views and 73K+ followers, and produced animation for The Grand Touhou Project Exhibition 2023.
His thing is practical, real-production shading – not theory dumps. He teaches how he actually builds and reuses shader nodes to get different moods fast, so you can stop copying tutorials and start making design choices on your own.
π Final Result
- Three fully shaded and rendered stylized characters – modern, fantasy, and sci-fi – plus a library of reusable shader node groups, baked textures, and a polished final render with compositing finish for your portfolio.
