Making the reader laugh with a story is the daily bread of the Argentine cartoonist Ricardo Liniers Siri, better known as Liniers. With a trajectory of more than 17 years illustrating daily strips of graphic humor, nobody knows better than him the secrets of this art.

His work has covered newspapers such as Page 12, La Nación, El País, covers for The New Yorker and King Features, record covers for musicians like Andrés Calamaro, live shows with the musician Kevin Johansen and the illustrator Alberto Montt, as well as the Publication of 30 books published in more than 17 countries. His career has been recognized at the Comic-Con 2018 (USA) with the Eisner Prize – the “Oscar of the illustrators” – and the Inkpot Prize.

In this course, Liniers will share the secrets to start you in the laborious art of producing daily graphic humor. You will learn to provoke surprise and humor in the reader, and you can make your own graphic strip with original characters, from the hand of one of the most renowned cartoonists in Latin America.

What will you learn in this online course?
You will start the course knowing Liniers, who will introduce himself and make a brief review of his career, from the first fanzines to the covers of The New Yorker and King Features. You will discover its main references of graphic humor and also of other genres such as cinema, music, art, among others.

You will enter in context with a brief but important introduction to the history of the daily strip, and you will analyze the different types of humor that authors can use to develop their stories.

You will know the materials that Liniers uses to work, and other tools that will give you more possibilities to develop an original strip. In addition, you will learn to organize an ideal workspace based on your experience.

Liniers will show you his process to make a humor strip step by step. First he will talk to you about the fundamental aspect of all artistic work: the idea; where it comes from and how you can get to it. Then you will see how you can build your own character from scratch with simple methods and, finally, you will learn the process to tell your story by defining details such as elements, composition, strokes and color.

You will discover why drawing well is different from drawing funny or humorous, and the importance of perseverance to get the full potential of an idea.

You will know commercial aspects of the world of comics that will be very useful, such as self-publishing, publishers, agents, social networks, etc.

Finally, Liniers will give you a series of tips from his experience, some that helped him and others that could have helped him at the time, to prevent you from making the same mistakes and pay more attention to certain details that can help you in the beginning of your profession as a cartoonist.
