Stuck redrawing the same 2D limits? Concept artist Inkyung Lee β former Lead Concept Artist at EA BioWare with 14 years of production experience β teaches the illustrator-first 3D workflow she optimized through years of trial and error: free tools (Blender, DAZ 3D), no modeling-specialist detours, just the functions illustrators actually need. Across 22 lectures / 15 hours 23 minutes you take one realistic-style illustration from sketch and pose plan through cloth, hair, ornaments, particles and render passes to a finished Photoshop retouch.
π― What you’ll learn
- Plan a 3D illustration from idea sketch: composition, value checks and the 3D/2D work split
- Pose characters fast in DAZ 3D and bridge them into Blender with render-ready keyframes
- Compose shots with cameras, frame ratios, kitbash and modeled background objects
- Light for mood: HDRI base lighting, Blender light types and in-scene mood setups
- Sew garments with cloth simulation (patterns, Simply Cloth Pro, mesh cleanup) and Marvelous Designer alternatives
- Build hairstyles with curve tools (massing, braids, buns, particle hair) and attach ornaments to curved surfaces
- Texture with Blender PBR shaders, procedural vs. image texturing and UV unwrapping
- Finish fast: ivy and scatter vegetation, magic particle and smoke effects, multi-lighting via scenes, render passes and Photoshop retouch
β Requirements
- Skills: Basic drawing fundamentals; Blender experience not required (course level: intermediate, taught from an illustrator’s point of view)
- Tools: Blender 3.2 (3.x allowed), DAZ 3D, Photoshop for the retouching chapters; Simply Cloth Pro addon optional (replaceable with built-in tools)
- Hardware: PC capable of running Blender 3.x and cloth/particle simulations, minimum 16GB RAM, dedicated GPU recommended
π Description
This class is built for 2D artists, not 3D generalists. Instead of exhaustive modeling theory, every feature is taught in the order a working illustrator uses it: sketch the idea and check composition and value, decide what belongs in 3D versus 2D, pose a DAZ 3D base in minutes, then compose, light and dress the scene in Blender β cameras and kitbash first, mood lighting second, garments and hair third.
The middle chapters solve the designs illustrators usually abandon: cloth-simulated clothing from patterns, curve-built hairstyles from massing to braids and buns, ornaments that sit correctly on curved surfaces, instanced magic objects and sculpted staff details. Materials stay practical β Blender PBR shaders, procedural-versus-image decisions and just enough UV work to hold up at render distance.
The finishing pipeline is where the speed comes from: vegetation from Ivy Gen and built-in scatter addons, particle magic and smoke without deep physics dives, multi-lighting variants through scenes and view layers, and render passes (plus color masks) prepared so the Photoshop retouch takes half the usual time. The course closes with portfolio advice aimed at overseas AAA studios and their interview process. Stage-by-stage 3D files (OBJ, BLEND) and the final PSD are included.
Course is in English (level: intermediate, 22 lectures / 15h 23m, 3D source files and final PSD included). Card built from the manufacturer page via the Coloso dump pipeline.
π§βπ Who this course is for
- 2D illustrators whose work has plateaued and who feel limited in design range
- Concept artists who want realistic light, space and detail without becoming modeling specialists
- Artists targeting overseas AAA-style portfolios with an efficient free-tool workflow
π§βπ« About the Author
Inkyung Lee (μ΄μΈκ²½) is a concept artist with 14 years across Korean and North American game studios, including Lead Concept Artist at EA BioWare, background art for Toppig and Dragonica, and current teaching as an Artblue instructor and YouTube creator. She has used 3ds Max, Blender and ZBrush in painting work since 2009, distilling them into an optimized illustrator-first pipeline through sustained production trial and error. Her realistic-style 3D illustration workflow is taught exclusively on Coloso.
π Final Result
- One finished realistic-style 3D illustration β posed, clothed, lit and retouched β from sketch to Photoshop final
- A repeatable free-tool pipeline (Blender + DAZ 3D + Photoshop) for complex designs, plus direction for overseas studio applications
