Sell weight and effort by animating believable standing up and heavy lift shots in Maya.

If your characters still feel floaty, this is the fix. You get two hard body mechanics shots β€” standing up and a heavy lift β€” and you learn how to sell real mass, balance, and strain in Autodesk Maya.

🎯 What you’ll learn

  • Shift Center of Gravity correctly from seated to standing pose
  • Drive motion from the hips and lock the feet for solid balance
  • Build compression and anticipation before a heavy lift
  • Distribute force through spine, shoulders, and elbows
  • Control overshoot and settle at the top of the lift
  • Use video reference to find natural biomechanical markers

βœ… Requirements

  • Skills: Basic Maya navigation and keyframing, familiarity with the 12 principles of animation
  • Tools: Autodesk Maya, Animawarriors character rigs provided with the course
  • Hardware: Standard workstation able to run Maya viewport smoothly, 3-button mouse

πŸ“ Description

This one is all about weight. Not fake weight with a slow-down and a shake β€” real, readable mass. Jorge walks you through how to act it out yourself first, then translate that into golden poses that read as effort before you even touch the graph editor.

For the standing up shot, it starts with the Center of Gravity. You sit, you lean forward, hips do the work, feet catch you. Get that order wrong and the shot looks like the character is pulled up by a string. You will block the shift, nail the hip drive, and keep the feet planted so the balance feels earned.

Then the heavy lift. This is where most animators cheat. Here you don’t. You build a proper compression, let the shoulders lag behind the hips, and pull through the spine and elbows in sequence. At the top, you deal with momentum β€” overshoot, wobble, settle. That is what sells 20kg vs 200kg.

Workflow-wise it’s straight Autodesk Maya blocking to spline. Reference analysis, key storytelling poses, breakdowns for arcs and spacing, then polish without killing the texture. No fancy tools, just solid mechanics and clear staging of effort.

It’s self-paced and on-demand, so you can grind on the same 30 frames until the weight clicks. Perfect if your walks and runs are okay but your physical shots still look light.

πŸ§‘β€πŸŽ“ Who this course is for

  • Intermediate animators who can keyframe in Maya but struggle to sell weight and balance
  • Students building a body mechanics reel and needing strong physicality shots like lifts, pushes, and get-ups

πŸ§‘β€πŸ« About the Author

Jorge Vigara is a working character animator and instructor with Animawarriors, focused on physicality and acting for games and film. He teaches body mechanics the practical way β€” reference, posing for mass, and spacing you can actually control. Known for breaking down tricky weight shots into clear, repeatable steps.

🏁 Final Result

  • Two finished portfolio shots: a seated-to-standing weight transfer and a full heavy lift with anticipation, pull, and settle, animated on a professional Maya rig.
