M.B shows you how to stop treating background and character as two separate jobs. You will finish two full illustrations while learning composition that creates depth, light that sells the mood, and paint work that ties it all together.
🎯 What you’ll learn
- Build compositions that guide the eye using framing, silhouette, and visual flow
- Choose the right layout for your concept and avoid flat, boring setups
- Paint light and shadow based on how light actually behaves in different environments
- Create depth with perspective, aerial perspective, and color distance cues
- Draw and place characters so they boost the background instead of floating on top
- Pick working color palettes and finish with expressive brushwork and effects
✅ Requirements
- Skills: Basic drawing skills, familiarity with digital painting workflow
- Tools: CLIP STUDIO PAINT EX 1.9.10 or higher, drawing tablet
- Hardware: PC or Mac capable of running CLIP STUDIO PAINT smoothly
📝 Description
Most flat illustrations are not a painting problem. They are a planning problem. M.B starts with what actually makes a layout work – how lines lean, how silhouettes read, how composition pushes the eye where you want it. You get the classic patterns, book-illustration layouts, and the difference between setups that pop and ones that fall apart. Short, practical, no fluff.
Then it gets technical in a good way. You will break down light and shadow, reflection, different times of day, and materials, plus perspective and aerial perspective to sell real distance. That includes stuff like Rayleigh and Mie scattering, but explained like: here is why the far mountains go blue, here is how to use it. Once you can control that, you can fake scale and atmosphere on purpose.
The second half is where character meets background. M.B covers anatomy basics, deformation, hair and costume motion, and facial structure in 3D so your people do not look pasted on. Then color theory tied to concept, his loose brush touch for clouds, nature, and props, and effects that shift the whole mood. You watch it all applied twice – once for a landscape-led piece, once for a character-led piece, from idea to finished file.
🧑🎓 Who this course is for
- Illustrators who can draw characters but their backgrounds feel flat or empty
- Beginners to intermediates who want a clear system for composition, light, and color instead of guessing
🧑🏫 About the Author
M.B is a freelance illustrator known for big, kinetic images that mix sweeping scenery with strong characters. After starting in game-style character work, a collaboration with Vocaloid producer Orangestar pulled him into landscape illustration, where he built his current voice. His credits include #COMPASS, Hatsune Miku card illustrations, After the Rain’s album art, and postal and book projects in Japan. He teaches the way he learned – self-taught, trial-and-error, focused on thinking through the why, not just copying steps.
🏁 Final Result
- Two finished portfolio pieces: one landscape-led concept illustration and one character-led concept illustration, both with full depth, lighting, and color direction, plus bonus paint-process and face-drawing data files.
