Close-ups are brutal. No body to hide behind, no big gestures — just eyes, tiny muscle shifts, and timing. This course breaks that down into three clear passes so you can build believable thinking characters without getting lost.
🎯 What you’ll learn
- Animate believable eye darts, focus shifts, and blinks that show thought process
- Build full-face pantomime with layered micro-expressions
- Connect brow, cheeks, nose, and mouth so the face works as one system
- Animate accurate lip sync that still keeps emotional weight
- Stage and polish close-up shots for reel-ready presentation
✅ Requirements
- Skills: Basic understanding of animation principles, familiarity with graph editor and posing
- Tools: Autodesk Maya or any 3D animation package with a facial rig, video reference player
- Hardware: PC capable of running 3D software smoothly, headphones for dialogue work
📝 Description
Kevin keeps it practical. No theory dump. You start with just the eyes, because if the eyes don’t think, nothing else matters. You’ll work on where the character looks, for how long, and why. Small darts, holds, and lid changes do more for a close-up than any big mouth move.
Then you add the rest of the face. This is where micro-expressions, facial asymmetry, and muscle overlap come in. You’ll see how a brow hit travels down to the lids and cheeks, how tension in the mouth shows up in the nose. It’s all about layering, not sculpting one perfect pose.
Last part is dialogue. Lip sync, jaw timing, and emotional layering have to work together. Kevin shows how to get the mouth accurate without making it robotic, and how to keep the eyes alive while the character talks. You finish with shots that actually hold up at 2 feet from the camera.
