Learn how OpenGL actually works and code your own shaders, textures, and lighting from scratch.

If you ever copied OpenGL code and had no idea why it worked, this course fixes that. You build a small graphics engine from zero and learn what the pipeline is actually doing with shaders, buffers, and transformations.

🎯 What you’ll learn

  • How shaders and the graphics pipeline render images on screen in OpenGL
  • Different transformations, projections and views in 2D and 3D
  • How VAO and GLM work in practice
  • How to code and use your own textures in OpenGL
  • Ambient, diffuse and specular lighting theory and how to code your own Light class
  • How to set up extensions with GLAD and work with SDL in a modern OpenGL project

✅ Requirements

  • Skills: Basic understanding of C++ programming
  • Tools: C++ compiler and IDE, SDL, GLM and GLAD libraries
  • Hardware: PC capable of running Modern OpenGL, dedicated GPU recommended

📝 Description

This is not a “type this and hope it runs” kind of course. The whole point is theory + practice. You get why the graphics pipeline works the way it does, then you write the code yourself — VAO setup, VBOs, custom GLSL shaders, the lot.

We start small: window, context, your first triangle. Then it gets real. You’ll wire up input, work with extensions via GLAD, load SDL, and build a proper rendering loop you can actually reuse. No black boxes.

Then comes the fun part — moving stuff in 3D. We break down the model matrix, view matrix, and projection matrix piece by piece, plus how GLM handles the math for you. You’ll finally get why your object disappears when the camera math is wrong, and how to fix it fast.

Last stretch is all about looks: textures and light. You’ll code your own texture loading, play with UVs and multiple textures, then build a Light class for ambient, diffuse, and specular lighting. By the end you have a lit 3D scene you built and understand, not just copied from a tutorial.

🧑‍🎓 Who this course is for

  • Beginners curious about OpenGL and 3D game development
  • Developers interested in basics of 3D graphics and how game engines render
  • C++ developers looking to add OpenGL to their skillset

🧑‍🏫 About the Author

The instructor is a University lecturer who has been teaching OpenGL, game design, and C++ for over 5 years. He put this course together because he kept seeing low-quality OpenGL tutorials with zero explanation of the theory. His classes focus on building a solid foundation you can actually use in real 3D projects and game prototypes.

🏁 Final Result

  • A portfolio-ready real-time 3D scene built in Modern OpenGL with custom GLSL shaders, textured models, model-view-projection camera movement, and a coded ambient/diffuse/specular lighting setup.
