Learn to draw clean, believable characters from any angle with Guweiz's practical system for anatomy and proportion.

This is Part 01 of Guweiz’s Signature Series, and it’s all about getting your character fundamentals right. No fluff, no guesswork — just working methods for anatomy, proportions, and drawing the same character cleanly in front, side, and back views.

🎯 What you’ll learn

  • Use references effectively to extract proportions, landmarks, and usable visual info
  • Break characters down into simple forms and build solid structure from head to legs
  • Measure and adjust proportions with head-height ratios, joint placement, and widths
  • Place facial features with landmarks, planes, and head-to-neck connections
  • Draw functional body anatomy – torso, pelvis, legs, and feet – for stylized characters
  • Draw consistent front, side, and back views and render them to a clean finish

✅ Requirements

  • Skills: Basic drawing ability, no prior character design experience needed
  • Tools: Clip Studio Paint, Adobe Photoshop, Procreate, drawing tablet
  • Hardware: PC or tablet capable of running digital painting software

📝 Description

Guweiz calls these functional foundations for a reason. Every lesson ties directly to stuff you’ll actually use: how to see a character as torso, head, and legs, how to keep balance top-to-bottom, and how to fix wonky limbs before they ruin a drawing. You’ll work with head-height ratios, joint placement, and simple box forms so your characters stand right and read clearly.

A big part of the class is references. Not copying, but reading them. Guweiz shows how he pulls proportions, facial landmarks, and body mechanics from photos and turns them into clean, stylized drawings. You’ll practice the same way he learned as a self-taught artist — break it down, measure it, draw along, repeat.

You get 18 lessons plus demos in Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop, with full-res PSD files, class slides, and 12 draw-along exercises. That includes torso practice, midsection, legs, measuring people, resizing characters, and finally drawing your own character from three angles. Brush pack is simple on purpose: round brush, pencil, eraser. Less fiddling, more drawing.

🧑‍🎓 Who this course is for

  • Beginner artists who want a clear, intuitive way into proportions and anatomy
  • Aspiring character designers who want Guweiz’s actual process, not just theory
  • Learning artists who want to rebuild shaky fundamentals and get consistent results

🧑‍🏫 About the Author

Hi, I’m GUWEIZ — freelance illustrator, 11 years in. I’ve done concept and illustration work for Bandai Namco, Game Freak, Square Enix, and Guerilla, plus cover work for HarperCollins. I’m also the author of [GUWEIZ The Art of Gu Zheng Wei] (2020) and [World of Guweiz] (2023), and a contributing writer for 3dtotal‘s Color and Light and Perspective and Depth.

I didn’t go through formal art school, so I had to figure out what actually moves the needle. This class is that shortlist. Just the structural thinking, measuring habits, and reference workflow I still use every day.

🏁 Final Result

  • A finished turnaround of your own original character in front, side, and back views, with clean structure and simple rendering — ready for your portfolio as proof of solid fundamentals.
