This course will focus on understanding the structure and form of various animal species through the art of Sketchbooking. Students will study a different group of animals each week, including birds, big cats, ungulates , canids, and reptiles. Through the use of various sketchbooking mediums, students will learn to indicate texture and musculature, with an emphasis on shape design as well as page composition. Instructional demonstrations paired with informative talks on the species themselves makes this class a wonderful choice for fine artists, illustrators and concept artists alike!

Materials:

  • Sketchbook (toned and/or white)
  • Graphite pencil (wood, various hardness)
  • Mechanical pencil
  • Kneaded eraser
  • White eraser
  • Ballpoint pen

Optional materials:

  • Mixed media/wet media sketchbook
  • Walnut ink/sepia ink
  • White charcoal pencil
  • White out pen/white paint pen
  • Brush pen

As an avid naturalist, Tom’s love for wildlife led him to discover his passion for animal art and creature design at an early age. Tom currently works as a freelance illustrator and concept artist for clients such as Wizards of the Coast, Paizo Publishing, Wizkids, Cubicle 7, Fantasy Flight Games, Sony Online, and Griffin Road Games, and is the lead Art Director for Draco Studios “Dragonbond’ setting.
