Sculpt, pose, detail, and paint Raphael from scratch in Nomad Sculpt and keep a reusable base for the rest of the turtles.

If you already poke around in Nomad Sculpt and want a proper character project, this one hits home. You’ll block, pose, detail, and paint Raphael from scratch right on your tablet, and save a posable base mesh you can reuse to make the other three turtles.

🎯 What you’ll learn

  • Block out a stylized turtle body, hands, feet, and shell from primitives
  • Use hierarchy and gizmo posing to get a solid action pose
  • Clean up sculpts with voxel remeshing, quad remesher, and decimation
  • Sculpt stylized anatomy, skin texture, and fine surface details
  • Model accessories like headband, wraps, belt pouch, and sai weapons
  • Paint, light, and render the final character with a Nomad turntable

✅ Requirements

  • Skills: Comfortable with Nomad Sculpt basics, navigation, brushes, and remeshing
  • Tools: Nomad Sculpt installed, stylus / Apple Pencil for sculpting control
  • Hardware: iPad or Android tablet capable of running Nomad Sculpt

📝 Description

This isn’t a button-tour. You jump straight into a full character build and learn by doing. Dave starts with reference and rough blocking, so proportions and silhouette read right before you commit to anything. Then you work through hands, feet, shell, and torso, cleaning as you go instead of fighting dense meshes later.

The middle of the class is where it gets practical. You’ll set up hierarchy for arms, legs, head, and shell, then push a real action pose without breaking the sculpt. Dave shows where to use voxel remeshing, where quad remesher makes sense, and when to just decimate and move on. That workflow alone will save you a ton of headaches on future characters.

Then it’s all personality. Skin bumps, knuckles, wraps, headband knots, weapon grips — the small stuff that sells a TMNT sculpt. You finish with vertex painting, simple lighting setup, and a clean turntable render straight out of Nomad. Plus you keep the posable base, so Leonardo, Mikey, and Donnie are way faster next time.

🧑‍🎓 Who this course is for

  • Nomad Sculpt users who know the basics and want to tackle a full advanced character
  • TMNT fans, illustrators, and 3D hobbyists who want a portfolio-ready stylized sculpt done on tablet

🧑‍🏫 About the Author

Dave Reed, aka Drugfreedave, is a 2D & 3D Illustrator based in Brooklyn, NY and a Skillshare Top Teacher. He works across character design and tablet-based 3D, with a focus on practical Nomad Sculpt workflows for stylized figures. He teaches the way he works — straight to the sculpt, lots of iteration, no fluff.

🏁 Final Result

  • A completed, painted 3D sculpt of Raphael in a dynamic pose with sai weapons, accessories, lighting, and turntable render — plus a saved posable turtle base mesh to build the other Ninja Turtles from.
