This course is about making 3D portraits that don’t look stiff and CG-clean. You’ll take a simple head model in Cinema 4D and turn it into an abstract, expressive character with custom textures, small facial movement, and a proper light and render setup.
🎯 What you’ll learn
- How to develop a visual concept for an abstract 3D portrait
- How to model a stylized head, face, eyebrows and lashes in Cinema 4D
- How to set up and apply facial rigs for subtle, lifelike animation
- How to paint custom textures in Photoshop and apply them to your model
- How to light, frame and render your portrait with OctaneRender
- How to polish and export your animation in After Effects for social and NFT
✅ Requirements
- Skills: Basic familiarity with Cinema 4D interface, interest in character work and motion design
- Tools: Cinema 4D, OctaneRender, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop
- Hardware: Computer capable of running Cinema 4D, dedicated GPU recommended for OctaneRender
📝 Description
Jonas starts with the idea, not the software. You’ll nail down a clear visual concept first – mood, shapes, color, level of abstraction – so you aren’t just pushing polygons around. Then you build the head from a base mesh up, adding face structure, brows and lashes until it has actual character.
The middle part is all about movement. You’ll get a practical intro to facial rigs, what controls you actually need, and how to pose them without breaking the model. Jonas shows the setup on two portraits, focused on small stuff: eyelid shifts, mouth tension, head drift. That’s what sells the shot and keeps it from looking robotic.
Then comes the look. You’ll paint your own custom textures in Photoshop and bring them into Cinema 4D for that hand-made, painterly feel. From there it’s lighting, camera work, and rendering in OctaneRender, plus a final pass in After Effects for grade, grain and clean export. He also covers how to present the piece on social and NFT platforms if you want to put it out there.
🧑🎓 Who this course is for
- Aspiring motion designers and 3D artists who want to get into stylized characters
- Designers who know a bit of Cinema 4D and want a full portrait workflow from model to render
🧑🏫 About the Author
Jonas Pfeiffer is a motion designer and 3D artist based in Hamburg. He started in broader design fields before locking in on motion and 3D, where he uses video and stills to trigger a reaction, not just show technique. His work leans into pushing portraits past realism – more feeling, more texture, more personality – which is exactly what he teaches here.
🏁 Final Result
- A finished abstract 3D portrait with subtle facial animation, custom painterly textures, lit and rendered in OctaneRender and polished in After Effects – ready for your portfolio, Instagram, or NFT showcase.
