- Add secondary debris, sparks, and shockwave elements for scale
- Light and render explosion passes for compositing
- Comp everything in Nuke for a gritty, cinematic finish
✅ Requirements

- Tools: Houdini (Apprentice, Education or FX license), Nuke for compositing
- Hardware: Minimum 16GB RAM, dedicated GPU, fast SSD for caching simulations recommended
📝 Description
This isn’t a button-press tutorial. Massimo shows you how he thinks through a hero explosion shot like in a music video or commercial. You start from reference. What makes a Mad Max explosion feel huge? Short, punchy fireball. Lots of black smoke. Heavy debris that actually has weight.
Then you build it. You’ll set up your Pyro solver for a vehicle-scale blast, control fuel and dissipation so it doesn’t look like a flamethrower, and layer in smoke trails that linger. For the War Rig itself, you’ll look at fracturing and rigid pieces just enough to sell destruction without simming for a week.
The last part is where it all comes together. You’ll render clean passes out of Houdini Mantra / Karma and take them into Nuke. Heat distortion, grade, atmosphere, camera shake. Small tricks that make VFX feel photographed, not CG. That’s the whole point of Massimo’s work – make the unbelievable credible.
You get tutorial files included, so you can follow along or pick apart the setup. Plus lifetime access and DoubleJump Academy certification when you finish.
