A complete course about 3D painterly artwork creation in Blender. This course bridges the gap between traditional 2D painting and 3D by teaching you how to take any painting or illustration and rebuild it as a fully realized 3D scene — all using Blender’s powerful texture paint mode. You will not sculpt or rely heavily on complex geometry; instead, you will learn to use hand-painted textures and smart shader techniques to achieve a convincing painterly look in three dimensions.
Designed for artists who want to expand their skillset into 3D without abandoning their painting roots, the course covers the entire workflow from scene modeling and UV mapping to hand-painting textures, edgework, lighting, and compositing.
🎯 What you’ll learn
- How to analyze any 2D painting and translate it into a 3D scene
- Blender’s texture paint mode — brushes, masking, and brush mechanics in depth
- Efficient modeling and UV mapping techniques for painterly scenes
- Hand-painting textures directly on 3D meshes to preserve an illustrative aesthetic
- Creating line art and edgework using both shaders and manual painting
- Compositing and rendering techniques to push the painterly look further
- Adding camera animation and basic sprite animation for presentation
✅ Requirements
- Skills: Basic familiarity with Blender’s interface and navigation. Familiarity with digital painting is helpful but not required.
- Tools: Pressure-sensitive graphics tablet, 3-button mouse, image editing software (Clip Studio Paint used in the course, but any image editor works).
- Hardware: System capable of running Blender 3.3 or higher. 16GB RAM and a dedicated GPU recommended for smooth texture painting.
📝 Description
This course demystifies the process of turning 2D paintings into 3D scenes. Rather than relying on sculpting or complex geometry, the core technique revolves around Blender’s texture paint mode — hand-painting directly onto 3D meshes to preserve the look and feel of traditional illustration.
The course is built around two main practical projects. The first takes an illustrative tree stump painting by Francisco and recreates it as a 3D scene, focusing on efficient modeling, UV mapping, and hand-painted texturing. The second project tackles a traditional-style still life painting by Noah Verrier, introducing shader-based edgework, camera animation, and compositing workflows.
Each technique is explained from the ground up. You will learn how Blender’s brush system works, how to use advanced masking to paint cleanly, and how to set up shaders that produce stylized line art and edge transitions automatically. The course also includes over five and a half hours of realtime process recordings so you can see exactly how each scene comes together from start to finish.
The instructor, Omar Faruq Tawsif (CraftReaper), brings his experience as a texture artist for games and animation projects, sharing practical surfacing techniques that are directly applicable to game asset production.
🧑🎓 Who this course is for
- 2D illustrators and painters who want to expand into 3D without losing their hand-painted aesthetic
- Blender users who want to master texture paint mode and painterly surfacing
- Game artists looking for stylized, hand-painted texturing techniques for game assets
- Anyone curious about the “3D painting” workflow and how to turn paintings into immersive 3D scenes
🧑🏫 About the Author
Omar Faruq Tawsif (also known as CraftReaper) is a 3D illustrator and texture artist with a passion for painterly artwork. He has worked on several unannounced games and animation projects as a texture artist over the last three years. His driving force as a 3D artist comes from a deep passion for art and traditional paintings, which led him to develop the 3D painting workflow taught in this course.
Omar also creates custom brush packs for Blender’s texture paint mode and shares free tools and assets with the community. You can find his work on ArtStation (omartawsif.artstation.com), YouTube (CraftReaper – Omar Faruq Tawsif), and Gumroad (omarfaruqtawsif.gumroad.com).
