Build your own frame-rate stable gravity, boids, and particle FX from scratch with Simulation Nodes in Blender 4.2.

Tired of Blender’s built-in physics falling apart when you change one setting? This course shows you how to build your own systems with Simulation Nodes and Geometry Nodes – gravity that holds at any FPS, swarms with actual behaviour, and particle FX you can still tweak after the fact.

🎯 What you’ll learn

  • Create simulations with Geometry Nodes that stay stable at 30fps and 60fps
  • Build gravity systems with proper delta-time handling
  • Develop boid behaviours for swarms that react to each other and the environment
  • Build particle effects for text morphs and fireworks explosions
  • Trigger simulations with Boolean logic for conditional setups
  • Optimize node trees for faster, cleaner workflows
  • Design interactive simulations that respond to their environment

✅ Requirements

  • Skills: Basic Blender navigation and introductory Geometry Nodes experience
  • Tools: Blender 4.2 LTS
  • Hardware: Capable PC with dedicated GPU and 16GB+ RAM recommended for heavier simulations

📝 Description

Blender’s default physics are fine until you want something specific. Then they fight you. Simulation Nodes flip that around. You build the logic yourself inside Geometry Nodes, and because it’s procedural, it updates when you change stuff. No rebake, no start-over.

First big win is timing. You’ll build gravity systems that use delta time correctly, so particles fall the same way at 30fps and 60fps. Sounds small, but if you’ve ever had a sim look perfect in preview and explode on render, you know why this matters. Get this right once and you stop rebuilding sims just to fix frame rates.

Then it gets fun. A falling particle is physics. A particle that avoids stuff, follows neighbors, or only triggers on a condition – that’s behaviour. You’ll set up boid behaviours for swarm movement, use Boolean logic to fire simulations on command proper particle effects like text morphs and fireworks. Same workflow every time, fully non-destructive.

We also clean up the mess. Complex node trees turn into spaghetti fast. You’ll learn how to structure, label, and optimize node trees so they run faster and you can still read them in six months. By the end you have working gravity, boid, and particle systems – and you can actually build your own from a blank graph.

🧑‍🎓 Who this course is for

  • Blender users with basic nodes experience who want custom physics instead of stock rigid bodies and particles
  • Game artists, motion designers, and hobbyists who want interactive, procedural FX for reels and projects

🧑‍🏫 About the Author

Hi, I’m Stephen – 3D artist turned Blender teacher. I started in 3DS Max back in 2005 while studying film and animation, then moved through Maya and Lightwave before switching to Blender full-time for modeling, lighting, texturing, and now geometry nodes.

After years learning with GameDev.tv, I caught the coding bug too and finished a second degree in Computing with Python, C#, and Software Engineering. These days I teach Blender for a living with GameDev.tv, focused on practical stuff you can actually use in games, illustration, and animation.

🏁 Final Result

  • A set of portfolio-ready simulations built in Blender 4.2: frame-rate independent gravity system, interactive boid swarm, particle text morph, and procedural fireworks – all with clean, optimized node trees.
