This class will focus on understanding the anatomy of winged creatures and how to successfully implement the subtleties of animal flight structure into your drawings, paintings, and illustrations. Students will learn the construction of flight muscles and feathers in various animals (including birds, bats and extinct pterosaurs) through écorché drawings and tracings. Working from photographs, observation and video stills, the instructor will also help students understand the wing beats and flight patterns that are unique to specific species, to better capture these details in their finished artwork. While the focus of this class will be on learning the anatomy of real-world species, students will briefly explore techniques for incorporating and applying this knowledge to fantasy and sci-fi creatures.
