8. Figure Drawing | Part 8: Atmosphere
In this series, master draftsman Glenn Vilppu shares with you his approach to figure drawing. In this final lesson of the series, you will learn how to add atmospheric tone to your drawings. Glenn begins with a lecture on atmosphere, followed by an analysis of atmosphere in Old Master works. He will then illustrate these concepts in some figure drawing demonstrations. First a dark tone is laid upon the paper and then the initial block-in is laid down in black pencil. Next the light tones are built up using a serrated eraser, which you can make yourself. This approach has similarities to sculpture and creates a three-dimensional and beautiful drawing.

Finally you will learn how to apply rendering techniques and surrounding atmosphere to give the drawing a final look.

Glenn will teach you how to use a 2B graphite pencil, stump, kneaded eraser, and sanguine and white pencils to develop a three-dimensional drawing with movement and grace.

In this video lesson, world-famous artist and instructor Glenn Vilppu demonstrates how to draw the female figure on toned paper using graphite, two kinds of white, and a soft sanguine conté crayon pencil. You will learn how to start with a loose gesture and construct simple forms on top that gesture. Glenn will also show you how to work with the core shadow and reflected light, eventually applying a sharp graphite line to tighten up the contours for a powerful effect.
