About This Class

In this class, we will delve into the art of painting a European Bee-Eater. The bright colors of this bird make it a visually appealing subject for painting, however, capturing its colors while still maintaining a fresh and lively painting is a challenging task. To make this class accessible to everyone, it can be completed in a single hour-long session (alla prima). We will be combining quick brushstrokes with detailed elements to achieve harmony between all the colorful sections of our Bee-Eater.

In this session, we will learn how to incorporate various simple watercolor techniques, using bold and playful brushwork. We will be focusing on painting large shapes and connecting them, rather than striving for perfection in minor details. We will embrace the unpredictable nature of the watercolor medium, and find joy in happy accidents.

Upon completion of this class, you will be familiar with:

  • Painting a colorful subject in one sitting (alla prima)
  • Planning and executing layers in a painting
  • Utilizing wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry painting techniques
  • Painting subjects in a confident and simple style
  • Mixing colors with a limited palette

This class is perfect for those who love nature, wildlife art, pet portraits, bird watching, nature journaling and anyone who wants to experiment with watercolor in a new and fresh way. So, join me and let’s get started!
