Soraizumi shows you how to turn a loose fantasy idea into a finished still that actually sticks in people’s heads. You will build one piece — a sky-reflecting castle in the sky — while learning composition, 5W1H storytelling, and how to make characters and backgrounds work together instead of fighting each other.
🎯 What you’ll learn
- How to use 5W1H to give a single image a clear story
- How to design memorable scenes with contrast, surprise and real-life reference
- Composition rules that work: three-part division, Fibonacci curve, aerial perspective
- How to handle 1, 2 and 3-point perspective without freezing up
- How to paint with grisaille + impasto and keep light and color in balance
- How to paint sky, clouds, plants, water, rock and stone architecture
- How to design costumes and poses that fit the world and hint at personality
- How to combine character + background, polish, and run a proper self-feedback pass
✅ Requirements
- Skills: Basic drawing fundamentals, familiarity with digital painting workflow
- Tools: CLIP STUDIO PAINT EX (Pro Ver 1.0 or higher recommended), drawing tablet
📝 Description
This isn’t a brush-settings course. Soraizumi starts with headspace: how to pick a theme, collect reference from real experience, and decide what to show and what to hide. That hide-part matters. You leave one or two bits of the 5W1H open on purpose, so viewers fill the gap with their own imagination.
From there it gets very hands-on. You will block small layout thumbnails, pick a composition that leads the eye, and set main / sub / accent colors early. Soraizumi explains light in plain terms — parallel, point and surface light, plus front, side and back light — and shows how contrast builds space, not just pretty colors.
For painting, he mixes grisaille with thick painting. Start from silhouette, build planes, then push light and color at the same time. Same logic for everything: clouds shaped by scattering and distance, water with reflection and transparency, plants broken into leaf / stem / trunk / moss, stone buildings built from boxes and cylinders. No magic, just repeatable steps.
The last stretch is about people. You define the character’s life with 5W1H, pose from force flow and silhouette first, then design a costume that reads at thumbnail size. Then you merge character and background, trim noise, add effects, sleep on it, and run a feedback checklist before calling it done.
🧑🎓 Who this course is for
- Intermediate illustrators who can draw but struggle to make images feel storied
- Fantasy and game-style artists who want stronger backgrounds, not just characters
- CLIP STUDIO PAINT users who want a full still-image workflow from concept to finish
🧑🏫 About the Author
Soraizumi is a Japanese illustrator with 13+ years in games and web design, including about 8.5 years in-house painting still backgrounds for smartphone games. Day job aside, he paints original one-shot fantasy worlds just because he likes them.
He started drawing in his 20s, worked through bishoujo games, casual game UI, web direction and ad illustration, and only later felt ready to teach. His thing is total balance: no side-character backgrounds, no floating characters — both sides push the story together.
🏁 Final Result
- One finished fantasy still illustration of the sky-reflecting castle, from concept and color rough to polished final with character, plus PSD / Clip files and relief pattern materials for your own work.
