Painting cityscapes can be intimidating, but after working on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, I’ve developed a streamlined process that makes it manageable and even enjoyable. This workshop is designed to demystify cityscape painting through a systematic approach, perfect for all skill levels. I’m not a naturally gifted artist but rely on structured methods, and I’m excited to share these with you over a 4-week period.
What We’ll Cover:
- Perspective Grids: How to set them up effectively for cityscapes.
- Composition and Drawing: Techniques for arranging your cityscape.
- Building Flats and Photoshop Tricks: Painting building flats and using Photoshop for spacing and warping.
- Lighting and Color: Applying the right lighting and color techniques for cityscapes.
- Atmospheric Perspective: Creating depth and atmosphere in your paintings.
- Reflections: Techniques for incorporating reflections in cityscape paintings.
Weekly Breakdown:
- Week 1: Mise en Place
- Focus on preparation: gathering references, setting up perspective, painting building flats, and creating initial drawings.
- Week 2: Building Layout
- Developing and arranging your buildings within the composition.
- Week 3: Color and Light
- Integrating color and light to unify and enhance the piece.
- Week 4: Final Touches
- Adding finishing details and final graphics.

- Tiers: Choose between receiving direct feedback during class or spectating without homework feedback.
- Format: 4-5 hour live classes featuring lectures, demos, and feedback. Recordings will be available within 24 hours of each class.
- Materials: Use any digital or traditional tools. Paintovers will be done digitally.
