Lettering as an Identity (Spanish, Multisub)

Learn how the shapes of letters can strengthen the personality of a message
Guille Vizzari and Yani Arabena – graphic designers, typographers and founders of the Yani & Guille studio – will discover Lettering as a powerful design tool. Thanks to him, you will be able to give strength to any message or represent a graphic identity.

In this course you will discover resources, calligraphic exercises, manual drawing techniques and vector digitalization that will make your Lettering designs shine.

What will you learn in this online course?
You will begin by getting to know Yani & Guille’s work, her training, her tastes and the reason why they fell in love with the lyrics. At this point, they will also make a brief review of what Lettering is, the importance of the word and the image and its visual influences when facing a new project.

Next, you will discover the particular work dynamics of Yani & Guille in which they unify Calligraphy and Lettering. Yani from the calligraphic, and Guille from the drawing and his more nerd side, will teach you some basic rules about Calligraphy (expressive possibilities) and Typography (sign system) to combine them with manual illustration techniques. Thus, you can also break these rules to achieve completely new forms and compositions applied to Lettering.

Then it will be time to define a phrase that represents you and analyze its possibilities according to the spirit of the message you want to convey. To do this, you will explore the forms until you get the words to become images, you will learn to combine different styles of Lettering and you will edit the result by polishing the last adjustments of the composition.

In the last phase, you will take your handmade sketch to the screen using two vectorization techniques (automatic and manual node to node).

Once you have your vectorized and adjusted design, Yani & Guille will give you some graphic resources to take your Lettering to the next level.

What is this course’s project?
You will design a phrase that represents you (whether your own brand identity or a product or brand that you like) creating a design (poster, postcard, business card, etc.) that serves as a promotional piece to spread your work.

This course is aimed at graphic designers and design students who want to get into the world of drawn letters, typographers and lettrists who want to know the working method of Yani & Guille, illustrators and artists who want to enhance their work including lettering as a design resource and any letter lover.

Requirements and materials
No previous knowledge of Illustration, Calligraphy and Typography is necessary.

Regarding the materials, you will need: pencil, eraser, tracing paper, white paper, black marker, a computer, Photoshop and Illustrator (or similar programs), a scanner or a camera to take the production to the digital environment.
